Since PHA's first Conference in 1994, physicians and nurses
have been an integral part of the event, presenting and participating
in a variety of sessions. As the medical component of PHA
grew, researchers proposed a session that would allow them
to look at PH from new perspectives.
In 2004, PHA received funding from the National
Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Office of Rare
Diseases (ORD) to add a day to the Conference that would focus
on medical research and issues associated with the illness.
Experts from around the world came to speak,
including Steven Archer, M.D., University of Alberta; Serge
Adnot, M.D., Service de Physiologie-Explorations Functionelles;
Alfred P. Fishman, M.D., University of Pennsylvania School
of Medicine; Judah Folkman, M.D., Harvard Medical School;
Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Boston University School of Medicine;
Noel Caplice, M.D., Mayo Clinic-Rochester; and Stuart Rich,
M.D., then at the Rush Heart Institute.
As a result of very positive feedback, PHA plans
to include Scientific Sessions in future Conferences and is
looking forward to expanding and improving upon an already
exceptional scientific program.
