I’m looking for a self-directed, cause-driven individual with strong communication skills to join me in creating opportunities for pulmonary hypertension patients get involved in solutions to issues that affect their lives. No prior knowledge of pulmonary hypertension is needed.

Our Mission
PHA’s mission is to find ways to prevent and cure pulmonary hypertension and provide hope for the pulmonary hypertension community through support, education, advocacy and awareness.

Since its inception in 1987, PHA has grown from an all-volunteer organization funded from the pockets of the four founders to one with more than 30 staff, 44,000 members and supporters and a budget of $6.5 million. We’re out to change the history of pulmonary hypertension and we believe that anyone whose life has been touched by this difficult illness has the right to fight back as much as they are willing and able. We also believe that PHA has an obligation to create the environment that makes such involvement possible. The Advocacy and Awareness Associate’s role in engaging our members through empowerment, organizing and community building is central to this position.

The Advocacy and Awareness Associate will:

  • Coordinate PHA’s grassroots media program, the PHAware Campaign
    • Provide advice, training and material resources to patients, family members and medical professionals as they share the story of how PH has impacted their lives with local media outlets.
    • Engage new Campaign members by celebrating grassroots successes and promoting the PHAware Campaign in PHA’s web and print publications and at PHA events.
    • Identify PHA-sponsored events that have local media potential. Link active Campaign members with these opportunities.
    • Continue the development of additional grassroots media strategies including social networking, patient promotion of local special event fundraisers and a public service announcement campaign.
  • Collaborate across departments on the development of PHA’s organizational media strategy. Ensure that PHA’s media outreach supplements the PHAware Campaign’s grassroots approach, which is at the heart of PHA’s mission, while remaining in tune with current professional trends.
  •  Build ongoing relationships with reporters, paid and volunteer public relations consultants and other media professionals.
  • Coordinate staff and constituent engagement in Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Month (November). Work with staff across departments to develop opportunities for constituent involvement in Awareness Month. Promote via print, web and social networking outlets.

Other duties as assigned by the Director of Advocacy and Awareness
This position is ideal for someone with 2-4 years work experience.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to PHA’s values of empowerment and constituent engagement
  • Comfort interacting and communicating professionally with individuals from a variety of backgrounds, including patients, medical professionals and media representatives
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Enthusiasm about working as part of a team; ability to work independently
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Bachelor’s degree and relevant work experience
