Pulmonary Hypertension Research Act

What the PH Research Act Achieves

The legislation authorizes the following:

  1. An expansion of pulmonary hypertension research at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (part of the National Institutes of Health).
     
  2. The establishment of three "Centers of Excellence" with public, non-profit or private entities to support the following activities:
     
    • basic and clinical research into the cause, diagnosis, early detection, prevention, control and treatment of PH
       
    • PH training programs for scientists and health professionals
       
    • continuing education for health professionals on PH
       
    • dissemination of information to the public on PH
       
  3. The establishment of a pulmonary hypertension data system and clearinghouse at NHLBI.

The bill authorizes $50 million for these activities for each of the fiscal years 2006 - 2010.
