Submit a Radio Public Service Announcement (PSA)
Brittany Evans and friend
I am more optimistic than I was six
months ago, even after losing my
career, friends, and many of the things
I loved to do. I want to tell everyone
about PH, get everyone involved. It
doesn't seem like such a selfish act
now that I know others struggling
just like I am.

Submitting a Public Service Announcement (PSA) to your local radio stations is a great way to raise awareness about PH. PHA has produced PSAs just for this reason.  You can listen to them here. Read the step-by-step guide to submitting PSAs to your local radio station. These aim to help the general public gain a basic understanding of PH and where to go for more information, so why not submit them to your radio stations and help people become aware of the symptoms of PH?

Steps:

  1. List your local radio stations
Think about the radio stations in your area. If you are unfamiliar with your local radio stations, you can make a list. There are three ways you can find information about your radio stations:
    • If you have Internet access, you can go to PHA's media search page. Type your zip code in the box and click on 'Go'. The next page will show a list of all the media outlets in your area. Scroll down to find the radio stations. You can click on their underlined names to get the phone number for each station.
    • If you do not have Internet access, you can use your local telephone book to look up radio stations and get their contact information.
    • If neither of these options are available to you, contact us at awareness@PHAssociation.org. We will help you get the information you need to compile your media list.
  1. Call the stations on your list
Some stations air PSAs, some don’t. Call the station and ask if they air PSAs. If they do, ask how they prefer to receive them – as text in a fax, or in a recorded format (on a disc), or even as an email attachment.

  2. Write a cover letter
When you submit the PSA, you can include a cover letter that demonstrates why awareness about PH is so important to you. You can share your personal PH story or the story of a loved one. Be sure to include some of the talking points about PH (PDF).

  3. Send PSAs to the radio stations
There are several ways to do this, depending on how the radio station likes to receive PSAs.

Fax – Make sure you have the radio stations’ fax numbers. Go to PHA PSAs and click on the “PSA text” link for each PSA. You can pick your favorite one, or use all four. Print out the text and fax it, with your cover letter, to the fax number the radio station provided.

Recorded format – Make sure you have the radio stations’ addresses. Go to PHA PSAs and follow the instructions to download the PSAs. Using your computer’s software, you can copy (or “burn”) the PSA files onto a CD. Mail the CD with your cover letter to the radio stations. (Note: If you have trouble copying the files onto a disc, call or email awareness@PHAssociation.org at PHA and we will help you with this or send you a disc with the PSAs.)

Email – If the stations provide you with an email address, you can go to PHA PSAs and follow the instructions to download the PSAs. Then attach the files to an email with your cover letter and send it to the email addresses the radio stations provided. Be sure to suggest they visit PHA’s website at www.PHAssociation.org or PHAs PSAs at http://www.PHAssociation.org/media/psa.asp.
  1. Check in with the radio station
Call the radio station after a month or so and ask if the PSA has gotten aired and if it has, how often.

  2. Update PHA
Let us know how it went – if the radio station has aired a PH PSA and what you thought about submitting PSAs. We’d love to know how the process went for you and if you have any suggestions! Contact us at awareness@PHAssociation.org.
