Special Events - 1st Annual Arizona PH Golf Tournament

Arizona’s First PH Golf Tournament: A Big Success

By Mandy Kimbrough

Arizona did it! We held our first successful golf tournament at Stonecreek Golf Club in Phoenix. Patients, family, friends, and medical professionals—all came together on a very warm and sunny April 16, 2005, to raise awareness and funds for pulmonary hypertension. All proceeds went to PHA for research and patient support services.

The day started off at 6 a.m. with registration, mulligan sales, raffle tickets and PHA merchandise items followed by a Shot Gun Tee time at 7:30 a.m. Golf registration included green fees, range balls, golf cart, yardage book, catered lunch, goody bag, and gift certificates. A barbeque lunch was served after golfing followed by a silent auction, raffles, and award ceremony. A 2005 Ford Mustang donated by Earnhardt Auto Centers was the hole-in-one prize for hole three. Although there was no lucky winner of the car, golfing was great and a good time was had by all!

There were over 40 auction items up for bid including a Leroy Neiman painting that sold for $1,150, his-and-hers Molina watches, jewelry, gift baskets, golf foursomes and equipment, and sports memorabilia. Raffle tickets were sold for over 60 items. There was also an airline ticket raffle that generated almost $1,000. All silent auction and raffle items were donated by various individuals and businesses within the community. A basket of golf balls was donated for a “Guess the number of golf balls” in the basket for $1 per guess—the closest guess went home with the tub of balls! A special thank you goes to all parties for their donations for our event.

Prizes included two sets of Ping irons donated by GoDaddy.com for the first place team, two Craz-E Ping putters donated by GoDaddy.com for the second place team, and two $125 gift certificates to McCormick & Schmick’s for the
third place team. Prizes for closest to the pin were two free rounds of golf at Stonecreek provided by Stonecreek. A very big thank you goes to all our sponsors: Actelion, Earnhardt Auto Centers, GoDaddy.com, McCormick &
Schmick’s, Myogen, CoTherix, Priority Healthcare, Accredo Therapeutics, Cucina Tagliani Restaurant, Hensley Beer, PRN Medical, Res Med, Pulmonary Associates, Southwest Capital Advisors LLC, and United Therapeutics. Numerous general donations were made for the event as well.

People visited the PHA merchandise table purchasing wristbands, bracelets, car magnets, and pins. Educational materials about pulmonary hypertension were also handed out. All in all, we netted over $20,000 for this most awesome event! Committee members received so many positive comments by participants and were pleasantly surprised with our final outcome from the event. Plans are already beginning for another tournament next year with high hopes of raising even more money. Hole sponsorships for next year’s tournament will be available for $1,000 a piece. If you are interested in sponsoring a hole or any level of sponsorship, please contact Marianne Curran at 602-258-4951 or Mandy Kimbrough at 800-232-1199.

This event would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of committee members Marianne Curran, Wendy and Bill Bockhorst, Trish and Mark Duque, Lee Billington, Robert Taylor, Mandy Kimbrough, Trish Dorrell, Marilyn Haney, and our many volunteers who put this event together. We hope everyone had a wonderful time and will join us again next year. Thank you very much from the Pulmonary Hypertension Support Group of Arizona.
