PHA Staffer Debbie Castro Races for Those Who Can’t
Debbie Castro began working at PHA because she wanted to make a difference in the life of her sister, a PH patient. When she was approached by Lisa Young about forming a marathon or racing team to fundraise for PHA, she never thought she would be getting involved as a racer and fundraiser herself. A year later, Debbie ran her first 5k as part of the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend in Orlando, Florida, and raised nearly $1,000 in honor of her sister, Alex Flipse.
According to Debbie, running the 5k was one of the best experiences of her life, “I love doing things for the PH community and especially my sister, but this was a real challenge since I’m not very athletic. I now consider myself a runner and I’m healthier as a result of doing something so personal for my sister Alex. I also raised nearly $1,000 by organizing a fun party and asking my friends to contribute and sharing my challenge with the PH community online. What a blast!”
Debbie is now training for a 10k and then half-marathon. She will organize a second fundraiser party and Circle of Friends letter writing fundraiser to coincide with the half-marathon run in the fall.
