Emergency Preparedness

When your child has PH, even simple medical procedures may be more complicated. Brian Hanna, MDCM, PhD and Steve Walker, MS, CRNP of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia discuss issues around anesthesia and surgery, the things to ask before PH kids undergo medical procedures, and offer recommendations on being prepared for an emergency situation.

Brian Hanna, MDCM, PhD 

Brian Hanna MDCM, PhD, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

Dr. Hanna is the current Director, Section of Pulmonary Hypertension for the Cardiac Center of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics of the University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine. He is a founding member of the Pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension Network, an organization of 8 international programs dedicated to fostering seminal advances in the field. The PH Program at CHOP follows over 500 children for PH. Dr Hanna has research collaborations across several disciplines in cardiology, neonatology, pulmonary medicine, critical care, pharmacology, radiology and surgery.

Stephen H. Walker, MS, CRNP

Stephen H. Walker, MS, CRNP, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

Steve graduated with a BA in Nursing from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Polytechnic prior to moving to the USA in 1984. He then attended Rutgers, The State University of NJ Graduate School and gained a Master of Science degree from the Graduate School, Newark in 1989. He then worked in the PICU at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, NJ before becoming an Advanced Practice Nurse in cardiology at St. Joseph’s. Since May 2009 Steve has been working in the area of pulmonary hypertension at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
