Title of Study:
A Clinical Trial of Aspirin and Simvastatin in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension
Description:
Symptoms of PAH often include breathing difficulties, fatigue, and swelling in the legs. In individuals with this condition, the walls of the lung arteries thicken and scar, causing the arteries to narrow. Tiny blood clots can also form within the arteries, leading to blockages. With narrowed or blocked arteries, the heart is forced to work harder to pump blood through the lungs. Over time, heart failure can occur. PAH is a chronic illness and there is no cure, but with appropriate treatment, symptoms can be controlled. Aspirin has been shown to prevent blood clots and is used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. Simvastatin, another drug, is commonly used by individuals with heart disease to lower cholesterol levels. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of aspirin and simvastatin, alone and in combination, in treating individuals with PAH.
