2008 Conference Scholarship Fund Opportunities

boy having fun at 2006 conferenceScholarship Home | Scholarship Application | Scholarship Sponsors

PHA facilities several scholarship opportunities to help those who need financial assistance attend Conference. On this page you will find information about the various scholarships offered through PHA.

You can help others take A Journey of Hope and Discovery at the 2008 PHA International Conference in Houston, Texas, by contributing to one of PHA's Conference Scholarship Funds.

PHA General Scholarship Fund

In 2006, the PHA Scholarship Fund helped more than 120 patients needing support attend Conference. We hope to continue this tradition of generosity in 2008 by making sure no patient who wants to attend this life-changing event is held back for financial reasons. Contributions of any amount may be made towards this fund.

Donations to PHA's General Scholarship Fund can be made by sending a check to PHA with "Conference Scholarship Fund" in the note section or by making a donation online and put "Conference Scholarship Fund" in the comments section.

If you are interested in setting up one of the following Scholarship Funds, please contact Andrew at giving@PHAssociation.org or 301-565-3004 x116 for more information.

Named Community of Hope Scholarship Funds

For a minimum contribution of $15,000, PHA will set up the “[Name] Community of Hope Fund” as part of our overall Scholarship Fund. Such named funds may be used in the promotion of Conference and will be mentioned in the Conference Program Book.

Conference 2008 Community of Hope Fund sponsors:

  • Pfizer Community of Hope Fund
  • Gilead Community of Hope Fund
  • The Tammy Hazen Community of Hope Fund

International Scholarship Funds

At its 2006 International Conference, PHA provided a shared exhibit booth for PH associations from throughout the world. The exhibit was very successful.  Leaders gave brief lectures on their activities, showed new media productions and hosted discussions. In addition, the exhibit became a meeting and exchange point for registrants from nations other than the U.S.

At the 2008 Conference, PHA seeks to build upon this success by providing an expanded area with theater seating for about 30. We will also make video and a screen available for more comfortable video and Power Point presentations.  In addition the international area and scheduled programming will be featured more prominently in the Conference Program Guide. We are seeking corporate co-sponsors for this exhibit.

Co-sponsorship: $15,000
Funding from this corporate co-sponsorship will be used to provide scholarships to international attendees.

Sponsors will be recognized in Pathlight, on the website, in the conference program and with signage at the exhibit site. PHA will encourage additional recognition as Conference international scholarship donors in the home countries of the international scholarship recipients.

Fellows Scholarship Fund

This is a new scholarship fund to encourage trainees in internal medicine, pulmonology and cardiology to develop clinical interest and scientific curiosity in pulmonary hypertension. These scholarships will provide airfare, hotel and registration for the meeting. It is hoped that these scholarships might become a prelude to the ultimate development of an annual fellows symposium, designed to develop a pipeline of bright interested dedicated clinicians.

Co-sponsorships are available for $15,000.

Tribute Scholarships

For a minimum contribution of $1,200, individual scholarships can be named in memory or in honor of loved ones. Tribute Scholarships will be mentioned in the Conference Program Book.

Conference 2008 Tribute Fund sponsors:

  • The Dorothy and Harry Olson Tribute Scholarship, contributed by Jackie Holt
  • The Heather Massey Memorial Scholarships (2 individual scholarships), contributed by John E. Nino
  • The Bonnie Dukart Memorial Scholarship, contributed by Dale Smith
  • The United Therapeutics Scholarships (6 individual scholarships), contributed by United Therapeutics
  • The Nathan Matuszewicz Tribute Scholarships (10 individual scholarships)
  • Scholarship Fund for California Residents (4 individual scholarships), contributed by the UCSD One Mile Walk for PH

Barbara L. Smith Scholarship Endowment Fund

Barbara L. Smith, a PH patient and PHA Board Member, worked tirelessly on behalf of the organization. After her passing in 2005, The Barbara L. Smith Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2006 by S&S Electric Company, Inc. and Vern L. Smith and Family in her honor. This endowment supports scholarships for PH patients who otherwise would be unable to attend Conference.
