The 2008 Scientific Sessions were held in conjunction with PHA’s 8th International Conference on June 20 in Houston, Texas. These were the third PHA Scientific Sessions, with a greater number of attendees than ever before. Over 350 medical professionals were in attendance for what was an innovative and exciting scientific program. The theme of this year’s Scientific Sessions, Determinants of RV Function on Molecular, Pharmacogenomic and Metabolic Levels, provided a framework for the presentations. PHA hopes that the 2008 Scientific Sessions gave attendees new ideas to bring back to their centers, to provide new directions for their research and new ways to think about PH care for their patients.
| The Scientific Sessions are dedicated to the exchange of information among medical professionals who work in the field of pulmonary hypertension. If space allows, patients may attend the Scientific Sessions; however, we ask that patients refrain from asking questions during the presentations. |
Over 65 basic and clinical science abstracts were submitted for presentation at the Scientific Sessions. The top four were selected for oral presentation, and the rest were presented as posters during the Scientific Sessions poster session. The conversations generated by the poster session helped achieve the goal to promote discussion of novel ideas among the PH medical community during the Scientific Sessions.
PHA congratulates the winners of the awards for best abstract in clinical and basic science:
Clinical Science Abstract Award Winner: Ronald J. Oudiz, MD (“Long-term Ambrisentan Therapy Provides Sustained Benefit in Patients with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension”)
Basic Science Abstract Award Winner: Christine M. Costello, PhD (“Potential Role for the Bone Morphogenetic Antagonist Gremlin in Pulmonary Hypertension”)
The winners, in addition to the following two abstracts, were presented at the podium during the Scientific Sessions:
Nazzareno Galiè, M.D. (“Bosentan Improves Hemodynamics and Delays Time to Clinical Worsening in Patients with Mildly Symptomatic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Results of the EARLY Study”)
Mark R. Nicolls, M.D. (“Cell Therapy Confers Protection from Immunodeficiency-Associated Pulmonary Hypertension and Prevents Activation of Right Ventricular Fetal Gene Program”)
Summaries of these abstracts, in addition to the two other abstracts selected for oral presentation, will be published in a future issue of Advances in Pulmonary Hypertension.
Although PHA encourages the submission of original abstracts, abstracts submitted to PHA do not need to be original work.

Up to 6.0 hours of CME credits for physicians, CEU credits for nurses and CPE credits for pharmacists were available for Scientific Sessions attendees.
Every PHA International PH Conference includes a Research Room dedicated to helping researchers further their studies by allowing for the collection of data, including biological specimens (i.e. cheek swabs, blood samples), from the largest gathering of PH patients worldwide.
