Conference Scholarship Application Process

How do I apply for a Conference scholarship?

  1. Online through PHA's online form.
  2. Print out the Conference Scholarship Application (PDF) and mail it to: Pulmonary Hypertension Association, Scholarship Committee, 801 Roeder Road, Suite 1000, Silver Spring, MD 20910
  3. Fax in your application to 301-565-3994

Who is eligible to apply?

  • You are a PH patient
  • You are a caregiver to a child PH patient
  • You are a PHA member
  • You did not attend the 2014 Conference on a full scholarship

*If you did attend the 2014 Conference on a full scholarship, but you are currently a Support Group Leader, you are eligible to apply for registration only.

* If you received a scholarship to any of PHA's International PH Conferences except in 2014, you are eligible to apply starting March 1, 2016 depending on funding. However, if you received a full scholarship to PHA's 2014 International PH Conference, you are ineligible to receive a scholarship in 2016.*

*If you are uncertain as to your eligibility, please contact PHA at 301-565-3004 x763. You may apply if unclear as to your eligibility however, an award is not guaranteed.

When will I hear back on the status of my application?

The first round of applications will be reviewed at the beginning of January 2016. Applicants will receive further information via mail by the first week in February. After the initial batch, applications will be reviewed bi-monthly until the application process ends on April 30, 2016.

Who is on the Scholarship Committee?

The Scholarship Committee is a blind committee comprised of PH patients and caregivers. Their names and information are not provided in order to provide anonymity to members. PHA staff members are not on the committee and do not determine which applicants receive awards.

What is the cutoff date to apply for a Conference scholarship?

Applications must be received by PHA by April 30, 2016 in order to be considered. The Scholarship Committee has made an exception for newly diagnosed patients. PH patients diagnosed after January 1, 2016 have a deadline of May 30, 2016.

I applied for a Conference scholarship and I did not receive an award, may I reapply?

You may only apply once during the application process to receive a scholarship. The Scholarship Committee decisions will be final.

Who will see my personal and financial information if I apply for a scholarship?

All information provided on the application is strictly confidential and will not be shared with anyone beyond the Scholarship Committee and select PHA staff.

What does a Conference scholarship cover?

The Conference Scholarship Program was created to help offset the major costs associated with attending Conference. The three expenses are registration, hotel nights and travel. Scholarships will be offered starting at $125 and awarded based on funds raised and greatest financial need. Applicants can apply for a scholarship to cover:

  • Registration only
  • Registration and up to two nights at the Conference hotel ($169/night plus taxes, currently 15% per night)
  • Travel stipend and up to two hotel nights
  • Full Scholarship - Registration, up to two nights at the Conference hotel and a travel stipend.

Do I need to be a PHA member to attend Conference on a scholarship?

Yes, attendance at the 2016 International PH Conference and Scientific Sessions is a member benefit for active PHA members. To check your PHA membership status, call PHA’s office at 301-565-3004 x756 or email, or you can check your membership status yourself online if you have setup a user account. You will need to be signed in. Registration on the PHA website does not constitute membership in PHA. Learn more about updating your membership  

I am an adult PH patient and I need my caregiver to attend Conference with me, can they apply?

On the Conference Scholarship Application, space is provided to indicate to the committee why they should consider providing additional funding for your caregiver. Please keep in mind that priority will go to PH patients and caregivers of children with PH.
