Visit a Local Congressional Office
“I first got involved with advocacy when my support group leader asked me to go with her and a few other group members to meet Senator Burr. I was really nervous sitting there. I was intimidated by his desk and all his pictures with the President and so on. Then, I looked down — he had no socks on! In my head I laughed. Then I relaxed and realized he was human. Yes he has a position of authority and can help us but he wasn't wearing socks!”

Members of Congress have staff and offices in their local districts as well as on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Organize a visit to one of these offices to bring attention to the individuals impacted by PH right in your community.
Identify your senators and representative and gather the appropriate contact information. If a Member of Congress has more than one office in your state, look for the one closest to you. Find contact information for Members of Congress.
Learn whether your Members of Congress are co-sponsors of the Tom Lantos PH Research and Education Act, or if they’ve co-sponsored in the past. PHA can help and you’ll be prepared to build a positive relationship by thanking your senators or representative appropriately for past or current support. Contact PHA for an update on your elected officials’ sponsorship status at Advocacy@PHAssociation.org or 301-565-3004 x749.
Call or email the appropriate local offices. Ask when the Member of Congress would be available to meet with you. If there is a long wait, consider asking to meet with a member of the health staff instead. View sample materials
Gather other community members. You don’t have to make your visit alone! For first time advocates, the support of 3-4 friends or family can make a congressional visit that much more enjoyable.
Contact PHA! We’ll send you briefing books to leave with your senators and representative during your visits. We can also provide tips on preparing for your visit and help following up after your meeting. Contact 301-565-3004 x749 or Advocacy@PHAssociation.org.
