Many insurance companies are unfamiliar with pulmonary hypertension and the complexity of treating this rare disorder. Even when they are well intentioned, medical directors and pharmacy directors may make mistakes in applying benefits to pulmonary hypertension patients.
When that happens, medical professionals and patients must work together to educate insurance providers on the correct course of action. This education may happen through a phone call from a physician to an insurance provider. More often, however, it involves a series of formal letters.
The Education Committee of the PH Resource Network, PHA’s membership network for allied health professionals, is working to create a resource guide to help medical professionals be effective advocates for their patients by crafting coverage request and appeals letters that contain the information insurance providers are looking for.
