PHA Research Award Winners
Since 2000, PHA has contributed over $15 million in funding to PH-specific research. 70 investigators have been supported through 8 independently reviewed research programs, including:
Robyn Barst Pediatric PH Research and Mentoring Program
Grants from the Barst Fund provide mentorship for young clinicians and researchers in the field of pediatric PAH. Grantees engage with an experienced mentor who is able to provide oversight and training in pediatric PAH treatment, management and research. In addition to the mentor component, grantees complete a proof of concept research project.
PHA/NHLBI Mentored Clinical Scientist Award (K08)/Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23)
This partnership with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) provides supplementary support for junior investigators who receive an NHLBI Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award (K08) or a Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23) for research in pulmonary hypertension.
Fellow Career Development
Fellowship Career Development Awards are designed to support the research of MD and PhD fellows undergoing training in PAH-directed research. Fellows are supported in the latter part of their training (typically after their second training year), in order to enhance their educational experience, advance discovery and promote careers in academia. Mentored projects addressing important areas of investigation in pulmonary medicine, critical care, and sleep-related disorders are encouraged.
Proof of Concept Research Grants
This program offers support for new research projects that are in the early exploratory and developmental stages and have the potential to lead to advances in the scientific understanding of PH. Projects often result in the development of data enabling the investigator to apply for a larger, hypotheses-driven research project.
Research Fellowship in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension
Historically a partnership between PHA and organizations such as the Foundation of the American Thoracic Society and Pfizer, Inc., this award enables new faculty-level investigators to make the transition to established investigators. Partnerships between junior and senior investigators are strongly encouraged and awards support novel studies of the diagnosis, pathogenesis, treatment or outcomes of pulmonary hypertension.
