PHA News is an e-mail newsletter from the Pulmonary Hypertension Association covering PH related topics.


First of all, I would like to wish each and everyone a Happy New Year. It has been quite a year for us. PHA News now goes out to more than 4,000 people. 2004 will be exciting. We will be having our 6th International Conference in June in Miami. There are many more treatments on the horizon. PHA is growing by leaps and bounds with members as well as services to our members.

Encysive shares rise 18 pct after upbeat analyst note

Shares of Encysive Pharmaceuticals Inc.rose nearly 18 percent on Tuesday after SG Cowen initiated coverage of the biotechnology company's stock by rating it "outperform," its second-highest rating. In a research note, SG Cowen analyst Phil Nadeau wrote that Encysive had "one of biotech's most promising emerging product opportunities for 2004." Encysive is expected to complete pivotal late stage clinical trials of its experimental treatment called Sitaxsentan for the often fatal condition pulmonary hypertension in the second half of 2004.

AstraZeneca Submits New Drug Application (NDA) for Investigational EXANTA(R) (ximelagatran) as First New Oral Anticoagulant in Over 50 Years

EXANTA is the first oral anticoagulant to reach late-stage clinical trials since the development of warfarin more than 50 years ago. The intended mechanism of action of EXANTA is to inhibit the activity of an enzyme called thrombin, which is critical to the final step in the formation of blood clots. Clinical studies with EXANTA utilize a fixed dose without coagulation monitoring.

Doctor explains concerns of cluster of pulmonary disease

Dr. Raul Menzoda-Ayala, a pulmonologist, said he is trying to educate the public about sarcoidosis, a disease he has treated in about 40 patients from the area. He also discussed primary pulmonary hypertension. Mendoza-Ayala said the cause of sarcoidosis is unknown, but that certain areas of the country tend to have clusters of patients. There must be something in our environment and in our genes that's causing this response," he said.
