Encysive Pharmaceuticals Inc.
on Thursday said regulators designated its hypertension agent Thelin
as an orphan drug, giving the company a seven-year exclusivity
once the medication is approved.
Thelin is geared at treating pulmonary arterial hypertension and works by blocking
endothelin, which spurs the growth of smooth muscle in vascular
walls and causes blood-vessel constriction.
