| CONGRESSIONAL LUNCHEON WAS A HUGE SUCCESS! |
|
|
Despite heavy rains the morning of PHA's 4th Annual Congressional Luncheon, the event was a huge success. Eighty-five people representing PH patients, family members, and corporate professionals, as well as their legislative supporters, enjoyed a buffet lunch while listening to a series of powerful speakers, each of whom approach PH from a different perspective. At the close of the luncheon, a number of legislative staff left the room with tears in their eyes.
PH community members used the time after the luncheon to make face-to-face visits in their Representative's office, resulting in new co-sponsorships for the PH Research and Education Act of 2007 and bringing our total number of co-sponsors up to thirteen.
The next few months will be an important time for the PH community to target the 247 individuals who co-sponsored the PH Research Act of 2005. We know that they support the PH community, now we need them to step up and co-sponsor our new bill. Take Action

AWARENESS MONTH OPPORTUNITY
MEDIA CORNER: Contribute an Op-ed Piece to Your Newspaper |
|
|
The op-ed section of the newspaper publishes opinion pieces that are about current news topics and are often written by experts in the field. Now that we have completed PH Awareness Month 2007, why not write about the continuing need to increase awareness about PH? And, as a patient, you are an expert on what it's like to live with PH!
Op-ed pieces can run a little longer than letters to the editor -- anywhere between 600 and 750 words will be just fine. If you are interested in submitting an op-ed piece to your local newspaper, but aren't sure what to write, you can contact us at 301-565-3004 x 109 or awareness@PHAssociation.org. She will be happy to help with ideas, outline the topics, and even review your writing.

SPREADING WARM HOLIDAY WISHES ABOUT PH
|
|
YOUR HOLIDAY CARDS CAN HAVE A 1-2-3 PUNCH!
At this time of year, many of us look forward to getting in touch with friends and family across the country -- maybe even across the world -- sending greetings of the season and good wishes for the year ahead. When you send your holiday cards this year, we hope you'll consider putting them to work to raise awareness about pulmonary hypertension and suggesting a donation to PHA.
By telling your friends and family about your life with PH you help others learn more about this rare disease. And, while people are in a generous mood (and thinking about their 2007 tax deductions), you may want to suggest a donation to PHA that will help us provide the myriad of services we know are so highly valued by patients and others. Donations can be mailed to us at 801 Roeder Road, Ste. 400, Silver Spring, MD 20910. We will notify you of any donations that we receive in your honor.
NEED THAT SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR SOMEONE ON YOUR HOLIDAY GIFT LIST?
PHA's store has a number of enticing items that would make great gifts this holiday season. First and foremost, check out our "CARD-iology" note cards. Each of the four beautiful designs was created by an individual whose life was touched by pulmonary hypertension. A set of 12 cards is just $15 and may be "just what the doctor ordered" for that special someone on your list. We also have PHA hats, tee-shirts, Champ the Bear and more. Click here to see all of your options.
HUB FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Each year in the spirit of the holiday season, Hub-Bub.com will partner with another nonprofit organization to raise awareness and funds. This year's fundraising item is a Christmas CD featuring various Spartanburg musicians. All of the musicians on this recording have donated their time, talents and money to get the CD produced. All the monies raised from the sale of the CDs and holiday concert tickets will be divided equally between Hub-Bub.com and the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA).
Hub-Bub is recognizing PHA is because of Jenni Messel. Not only was she a patron of Hub-Bub.com and a supporter of the arts in general, but she also spearheaded many projects to bring awareness to PH. Never one to sit idly, she founded a South Carolina support group, organized a charity walk and most recently had November declared "PH Awareness Month" by the Spartanburg County Council. Though she was successful in these endeavors, another one of her goals was to get the music community involved. Sadly, she passed away as a result of having PH and wasn't able to see this goal to its fruition. It is in Jenni's memory that Hub-Bub is proudly supporting the Pulmonary Hypertension Association cause.

Fighting PH with Gifts of Stock
As with many PHers, for years I was misdiagnosed as having panic attacks, altitude sickness or anxiety. As a nurse who took pride in staying fit, having my symptoms dismissed as anxiety was frustrating. Finally I recognized that something was seriously wrong when I attempted ice climbing (of frozen waterfalls) in Ouray, Colorado. That day I actually thought I was close to pushing up daisies (or perhaps icicles). It was then that I took control of my own health and ordered the tests that eventually determined my PH.
My husband, Bruce, and I both feel strongly about financially supporting PHA. We believe that the contributions we and others make will help educate health professionals about PH and eventually lead to a cure for this disease. For us the easiest way to donate is by donating shares of common stock.
