PULMONARY HYPERTENSION HIGHLY VISIBLE AT ATS ANNUAL MEETING
Members of the PH medical community and PHA staff were on hand to raise awareness of pulmonary hypertension at the American Thoracic Society's Annual Meeting May 16-21 in Toronto, Canada. Medical professionals gathered at the Metro Convention Center for five days of lectures, paper presentations, poster sessions, and networking.

More than 45 sessions about PH, including several poster sessions, were featured.  Members of PHA's Scientific Leadership Council presented in three different dinner lectures about PH, covering topics such as the REVEAL registry, the future of treatments, and the growing knowledge about familial PH.

As a member of the Public Advisory Roundtable (PAR), a group of organizations representing people affected by respiratory or critical illnesses and sleep-related conditions, PHA had the opportunity to participate in patient lecture sessions, a poster session, and the PAR Symposium. This year the PAR component of the conference focused on respiratory therapy, an exciting new area for PH patients and medical professionals alike.

PHA also raised awareness and gave out a lot of information at our exhibit booth. The exhibit area was amazing to see with larger PH exhibits dominating the floor. Gilead used their exhibit to raise funds for PHA with doctors taking a quiz about PH. Over $75,000 was raised to support PHA's work.

Additionally, important developments in the area of pulmonary hypertension were unveiled at the ATS conference. Here's some of the news that came out of this year's presentations:

PRESIDENT BUSH SIGNS GENETIC INFORMATION NONDISCRIMINATION ACT
DNAIt's official! After passing Congress on May 1, the Genetic Information Non-Discrimination Act (GINA) was signed into law by the President on May 21. GINA sets strict standards for the use and disclosure of genetic information and imposes penalties against companies that violate these provisions.

This law is an important protection for those with a history of pulmonary hypertension in their families, and the PH community consistently advocated for its passage. Read more on the PH community's involvement in passing this law

HOW I DISCOVERED A GREAT OPPORTUNITY ON PHA'S WEBSITE WITH THE GIFT CALCULATOR
by Rev. Stephen L. White

Steve White

Did you know that you could make money while helping PHA?

Like a lot of people, I sometimes while away time surfing the Internet. And lately I've spent quite a bit of time poking around PHA's information-packed website. It is truly amazing to see the breadth of information that is helpful to so many in their fight against PH. The other day, however, I made a surprising discovery while surfing the PHA site.

Terminal Illness Can't Dim Her Optimism
(Whittier Daily News) Whittier, Calif. -- To look at her and listen to her, Monica Marie Sanchez, 28, has knockout good-looks and a smart, energetic persona to boot. So, you wouldn't guess that she is classified as terminally ill and has been on a waiting list for a double lung transplant for seven years. In fact, she's at the top of the list and keeps letting others go ahead of her because she "feels pretty good." While she is not ready herself, she said she actively advocates for the organ-donor program. Read article

HIV, but Not HHV-8, Found to Increase Risk of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension
