Mary Saum

As told by her son, David Saum

My name is David Saum Jr. and I am a 22-year-old college student, triple majoring in criminal justice, communication, and digital media design. My mother, Mary, age 65, passed away on September 1, 2010 from pulmonary hypertension (PH) and a mix of other complicated health issues. Having been diagnosed in 2001, she fought this terrible disease for eight years, yet it progressively become worse as the years went by.

Growing up, I never really understood how this disease could cause so much pain — physically and mentally — for my mother and our entire family.

My mother, Mary Saum, native to her homeland of Laos, worked hard all her life and continued to work hard for the American Dream when she came to America. She lived a wonderful and fulfilling life after marrying my father and had a wonderful son named David. Her life continued to be fulfilling even after being diagnosed with PH.
