How I’m Using Yoga to Contribute to PH and PHA

I was diagnosed in mid 2004 with primary pulmonary hypertension. “I have what?” Honestly, I had never heard of this disease. I dove right in to educate myself beginning with my pulmonologist who referred me to PHA. The website, as well as “A Patient’s Survival Guide,” gave me a clear understanding of what PH is, what treatments are available and what is currently happening to find a cure.

I practice yoga and have for several years. Yoga helps center me and keeps me in the now with positive energy. I focus on what my body can do rather than the negative of what limitations I may have. The positive aspect of having PH inspired my daughter, Melissa Haney and I to found “PHreedm.” PHreedm is an eclectic, original line of yoga clothing and accessories. We in true yogic fashion, developed this line not only to shed light on this disease and raise money for research, but also to bring a positive energy to these two little letters that have had such a powerful effect on our lives. During Awareness Month and all throughout the year, 10% of our profits are donated to PHA. In the end, maybe we can help “phind” a little “phreedm” for all ph patients.
