Special Events, "Zebra-fied!"

PHA Special Events across the country are adopting our new early diagnosis campaign, Sometimes it’s PH, and its symbol, the zebra, in unique ways to increase public awareness of pulmonary hypertension.

PHA’s volunteer-driven special events provide a one-of-a-kind opportunity for those affected by PH to educate those with less direct connections to the illness. In an effort to help remove barriers to understanding and diagnosis, a number of our volunteer special event organizers have capitalized on that opportunity and “zebra-fied” their fundraisers!

Here’s a shout-out to the most creative and wide-reaching variations:

Baskets tied with zebra-striped ribbons5th Annual Swing4theCure Wojo PH Golf Classic (July): When Betty Lou Wojciechowski witnessed the launch of the Sometimes it’s PH campaign at PHA’s 10th International PH Conference and Scientific Sessions in June, she couldn’t wait to find large and small ways to incorporate the zebra theme into her milestone 5th annual tournament in memory of her husband and two sons. “Think Zebra” signs, along with zebra-striped pins and Sometimes it’s PH informational postcards acted as centerpieces at dinner, while silent auction baskets were trimmed in zebra ribbon (pictured right). Event volunteers and speakers even got in on the act! Betty Lou wore a zebra print top, her volunteers wore black and white, and guest presenters tied the campaign goals and theme into their stories of diagnosis.

3rd Annual Colorado PH Run for PHun (September): The pulmonary hypertension programs at the University of Colorado Hospital and Children’s Hospital Colorado, along with local PH support groups, have been growing their annual fun run so rapidly. They have decided to include Sometimes it’s PH campaign postcards and zebra-striped buttons in all participants’ race bags as a way to further their engagement in the Denver and Aurora communities.

North Texas “Zebra PHriends” 5K & 1M PHun Walk (November): Why not go all out during PH Awareness Month in November? For their 6th annual walk and 5K, the network of North Texas PH Support Groups decided to completely update their event name and image to spark discussion among their regular registrants and new participants alike. The group has an active Facebook Page and created a zebra-themed event website to complete the makeover.
