It was wonderful to see so many new faces at the 2007 PH Resource Network Symposium this year! The Symposium Committee worked hard to bring a variety of up-to-date topics and dynamic speakers to its two-day educational event at the Crystal City Hyatt Regency in Arlington, Va., in October. This biennial event continues to grow and was attended by 350 allied healthcare professionals including nurses, nurse practitioners and respiratory therapists. Many came away from the event with a sense of purpose and meaning in their professional daily lives. It was a huge success on all accounts and feedback from the attendees included “It is my first time to attend a PH conference and it is only now that I have realized how important the PHRN group is” and “It was the best organized, most informative and most useful of any conference I have ever attended in my 22 years of nursing…” Attendees felt that it was “Awesome to hear from the pioneers firsthand – Barst, Channick, Badesch.”
Thank you for a great conference! This is my first time here and I found it very informative and educational; the sessions were well-presented and led by great speakers.

The event kicked off with an inspirational and heartfelt presentation from the perspective of a family member affected by PH, Carl Hicks (left). His story moved us all and helped validate the hard work we do in our professional lives. The theme of this event, PHenomenal Progress in PH: Bringing Advances into Practice, sought to make this not only a very informative Symposium with educational viewpoints from nurses and physicians, but also an interactive one in which networking sessions were planned to enable attendees to hear from one another as well. The program covered topics ranging from the history and classification of PAH, current treatment options and guidelines for therapy, managing associated conditions, along with more practical topics including “how-to” sessions for approved PH therapies, how to start a PH program and early thoughts on possible nursing certification in this specialized field. There were 28 educational sessions offered and over 60 speakers generously gave their time and expertise to the event.
Attendees also had the opportunity to participate in Lobby Day, which occurred just prior to the formal start of the Symposium. This PHA-planned event allowed nurses who chose to arrive early to visit Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. and advocate with their representatives for the PH Research and Education Act. Many of the 60 nurses who participated had never lobbied before, but with the guidance of PHA staff, along with the expertise of PHA’s lobbyist, Gavin Lindberg, and the inspiration of Carl Hicks, the day was a success! The following week, the Act received three new co-sponsors, all of which received visits from participants on Lobby Day.
The PH Resource Network Symposium was planned and implemented by the PH Resource Network Symposium Committee. The members included Deb McCollister, Cathy Anderson-Severson, Barbara Smithson, Ann Gihl, Martha Kingman, Monica Horn, Maribeth Duncan, Susan Cartwright, Lisa Roessel and Lisa Taylor.
The Symposium was also made possible by the generous sponsorship of Gilead, Actelion Pharmaceuticals, Pfizer, United Therapeutics, Encysive Pharmaceuticals, Accredo Therapeutics, Eli Lilly, LungRx, Bogen Iodec, CVS/Caremark, and Curascript. These sponsors understand the importance of continued educational support for those of us on the front lines of care and we thank them for their generosity.
With the outstanding success of this year’s Symposium, plans are already underway for the next one in 2009! If you are interested in finding out more about PH Resource Network membership or how to become active in its committees, go to www.PHAssociation.org/PHRN or send an email to phrn@PHAssociation.org. PH Resource Network membership is open to allied healthcare professionals working in the field of pulmonary hypertension.
