Keynote Breakfast (Friday): Current Research in PH
The PH field is growing rapidly and continuously.  In this environment, it is essential for PH-treating allied health professionals to stay up-to-date on medical advances. Past PHA Board chair, Scientific Leadership Council  chair and internationally-recognized PH expert Michael McGoon, M.D. will be providing symposium attendees at the Friday breakfast with a keynote presentation, including a comprehensive update on current PH research. The breakfast begins at 8:00am.

Saturday Luncheon: REVEAL panel
The REVEAL Registry is one of the largest and most ambitious research efforts ever undertaken to study patients with PAH. As REVEAL grows and long-term data become available, the REVEAL Registry may provide the most current picture of the clinical course of PAH, as well as updated data on outcomes of different treatments for patients diagnosed with different types of PAH.  The closing REVEAL Outcomes luncheon at 12:45pm on Saturday features a panel comprised of leading medical professionals involved in the registry’s development and implementation.  They will tell the registry’s remarkable story and describe the information it is yielding.

Advocacy Day (Thursday)
The PH Resource Network Advocacy Day – bringing medical experts to Congress – is a key part of PHA’s educational strategy to engage those who provide governance on the issues that affect the PH community. Symposium registrants are encouraged to arrive a day early for a pre-symposium opportunity to visit their members of Congress to discuss issues relating to pulmonary hypertension and medical insurance. A training session will be held as part of this Thursday activity and those participating will be bused to Capitol Hill.

Room Key Cards
Received at check-in and used throughout the Symposium, special room keys will be imprinted with a welcoming message for Symposium attendees.

Symposium shirts
To keep the spirit of the Symposium going beyond our time together, each Symposium attendee will receive a limited edition high quality tee-shirt featuring the Symposium artwork on the front. Remaining shirts will be made available to new PH Resource Network members and at PH Resource Network and other PHA events, building PH Resource Network’s visibility.

PH Resource Network and PH Clinicians and Researchers Brochures
Over the past two years, PHA has distributed nearly 20,000 copies each of our PH Resource Network brochure and PH Clinicians and Researchers brochure. These brochures are one of PHA’s primary means for promoting membership in our professional associations, associations that together boast a current membership of well over 1,000 PH-treating medical professionals from all around the world. These brochures will be available at the 2009 PH Resource Network Symposium where they will be part of an every-member-recruit-a-membercampaign.

Welcome Dinner (Thursday): Allied Health Care Professionals Exerting an Influence
The welcome dinner on Thursday at 6:30-9:00pm opens the Symposium and presents the first opportunity for the community to get together in a working environment and to solidify under the Symposium theme: Leading Progress, Creating Partnerships: Empowering the Interdisciplinary PH Team.

Michael Petty, RN, MS, CCNS, the dinner’s featured speaker, returns to present on “Allied Health Care Professionals Exerting an Influence.” Originally a 2007 Symposium breakout session, its popularity soared to the extent that our Symposium Planning Committee unanimously chose to invite Michael to speak at a plenary session this year, allowing all attendees the opportunity to benefit from his thoughts.

As the most consistent point of contact for PH patients, nurses and other allied healthcare professionals are integral in guiding patients through the disease process, explaining medical therapies and understanding the psychological, emotional and social adjustments associated with PH and its management.  During this dinner, symposium attendees explore how they can translate the information they have about the patient experience into advocacy by active membership in the interdisciplinary PAH team.

Friday Luncheon: Palliative Care in PH
In a field where the cure is yet unknown, palliative care is an essential area of knowledge and practice. Keith Swetz, MD, a Mayo Clinic physician in the fellowship program in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at VCU will speak on the elements of palliative care in the PH field. This luncheon on Friday from 12:45-2:15pm will allow participants to learn new methods to apply in healthcare settings that will ultimately increase quality of life for both patients and their caregivers.

Break Package and Poster Session
The Symposium is a time of learning, and it’s also a time of socializing and networking. Three refreshment breaks provided during the Symposium allow attendees to get together informally.  For the first time at Symposium, one of the breaks will be at the Poster Session on Friday from 4:15-5:00pm.

Registration Kit
PHA promotes the PHRN Symposium broadly with Registration Kits. 10,000 kits are printed and distributed  to PHRN members, thousands of other medical professionals in the PHA database and distributed at various medical meetings.

Audio Visual
Increased audio visual support for various speakers throughout the Symposium provides an enriched learning environment for many of the Symposium sessions.

Survival Guides
PHA’s Survival Guides, long a valued tool for patients and their medical professionals is now updated at each printing, keeping much more current than in the past. The value of this 280 page book is recognized worldwide with English, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and Korean translations currently available and French, Farsi and Hebrew versions currently in translation. This year, each registrant will receive a coupon for their Survival Guide – in English or Spanish - which can be picked up at the on-site PHA store.

CEU credits
The 2009 PH Resource Network Symposium is an educational event for PH-treating allied health professionals. The opportunity to provide CEU credits brings additional educational value to Symposium attendees. Sponsorship of CEU credits will provide pharmacists, nurses and respiratory therapists the opportunity to earn up to 11 hours of continuing education credit.

Symposium Content CD-ROM and Web Presentations

Connections with home and work are always appreciated.  Through this sponsorship, PH-treating allied health professionals bringing laptops will be able to have free connections to the internet while in their room.

Awareness Welcome Packet
Symposium attendees will receive a special welcome packet when they check in at registration. The packet will feature items designed to raise awareness for PH, such as PHA’s wristband, car magnet, and pin. Symposium attendees are invited to visit PHA’s booth at the event to order more merchandise that helps spread the awareness message.

Saturday Breakfast:  Addressing Caregiver Burnout
Advances in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension have been rapid in recent years, but medical professionals still deal with the reality that we do not yet have a cure for the disease.   Loss is still all too common.  As the registrants prepare to return to their patients, this session will provide a window to self-healing for those who give of themselves.

PHA Board member Rev. Stephen White, PhD, who served as the Episcopal chaplain at Princeton University from 2000 to 2008 will present at the Saturday breakfast from 8:00-9:25am. Prior to entering the ordained ministry in 1997, Dr. White worked in various capacities in the health care field including hospital administration, managed psychiatric care, teaching and health services research and hospital consulting services. His own experience with personal loss (daughter Christen to PH in 2002) has allowed Dr. White to work with PH community members to address bereavement, social and emotional issues that arise from connections to chronic illness.

Faces of PH Resource Network DVD
In 2007, PHA produced a DVD that told the story of the Symposium and those who attend.  In 2009, PHA will use the experience to refresh and expand the message: What are the stories of those who treat PH patients?  Did they arrive at the doorstep of this illness by accident or intention?  Why did they stay? What is at the root of their devotion to their patients?  Why did they found PH Resource Network as their professional association?  What are their hopes for the future?

PHA will use the coming together of hundreds of allied health professionals to gather a new story of a medical community on the move.  The editing of footage from the Symposium and a series of individual interviews will weave into a presentation that will be used to recruit allied health professionals to the PH Resource Network and as a communications tool between medical professions and patients.

Program Guide
The program booklet is the guide to the Symposium.  It includes welcome messages, agendas and workshop outlines, as well as advertising from the sponsors of various activities.  This year, for the first time, it will also include the poster abstracts, making it a publication readers will want to share and keep.

The 2009 Symposium Flash Drive
More than a valued electronic tool, these flash drives will be the carriers of important medical information.  Every registrant will receive a flash drive holding electronic versions of all available handouts for the various Symposium sessions, saving attendees from carrying around handouts. Electronic distribution of materials via the flash drive helps PHA reduce its environmental impact, and of course, the flash drives have continuing value after the meeting.

Spirit of PHA/PHRN – Coffee Mugs
PHA has been working at building the identity and visibility of PH Resource Network as it continues to grow.  To that end, at the conclusion of each Symposium, PHA provides a giveaway to registrants, one that is attractive and will have ongoing use and visibility back at the medical center. For the 2009 Symposium, PHA is distributing a PH Resource Network coffee mug to each attendee at the end of the Symposium as a thank you.

Committee Meetings
The PH Resource Network Committee meetings will take place during the Symposium.  The PH Resource Network accomplishes much of its work through the activities of these five general committees (Education, Research and Publications, Membership, Symposium, and Strategic Planning).

International PH Conference Save the Date Card
As PHA’s 9th biennial conference  approaches, PHA is printing at least 15,000 Save the Date Cards for the 2010 Conference in Anaheim, CA. These cards will be distributed at the 2009 PH Resource Network Symposium. Attendees will receive packets of the postcards to bring back and distribute at their centers.

Padfolios
PHA padfolios have become a popular item at PHA Conferences in recent years, both as a convenient way to take notes at the meeting and a practical workplace keepsake.  Symposium attendees will receive a padfolio this year, and additional padfolios will be produced to be given as gifts to new members.

Symposium Bag
Every Symposium attendee will receive a Symposium bag at registration to hold Symposium materials.
