The
Role of the Scientific Leadership Council in the Pulmonary Hypertension
Association
The Scientific
Leadership Council (SLC) is composed of more then 20 leaders in the
field of pulmonary hypertension. The members of the SLC are clinicians,
research scientists, and nurses who come from medical centers recognized
for performing outstanding research and providing excellent care for
patients with pulmonary hypertension. An additional member advises the
SLC regarding matters concerning research in the National Institutes
of Health. The medical centers involved in the SLC include the Mayo
Clinic, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, University of California
San Diego, Harbor UCLA, Duke, Rush Presbyterian, University of Colorado,
University of Utah, Vanderbilt, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the University of Pennsylvania.
The SLC also has international members from Italy, Ireland, Germany,
and Canada.
The chair
and vice chair of the SLC hold seats on the Board of Trustees of the
Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA). The SLC is also represented
on the Corporate Committee, Conference Committee, and Strategic Planning
Committee of the PHA. The mission of the SLC is to provide medical and
scientific leadership and guidance for the mission of the Pulmonary
Hypertension Association by proactively facilitating the development
of new knowledge about pulmonary hypertension, actively disseminating
knowledge about pulmonary hypertension to medical and public audiences,
and advocating and raising awareness about pulmonary hypertension. Members
of the SLC speak at the biennial conference of PHA, provide editorial
oversight to PHA's publications as well as to the medical journal Advances
in Pulmonary Hypertension, and administrate PHA's research fellowship
program.
By collegial
collaboration among the members of the SLC, in alignment with PHA's
objective to work towards effective diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary
hypertension, the ultimate goal of curing pulmonary hypertension has
become a more realistic expectation.
