“Cruisin’ for a Cause”: Niece Organizes Fundraiser in Honor of Her Aunt

Jeanne Matre is very close with her aunt, Liz Brigham, who was diagnosed with PH in 2004. Jeanne says she thought about organizing a fundraiser for a while and was excited when her employer, ShopJimmy.com, a global TV parts distributor, was receptive to hosting a workplace fundraiser.
ShopJimmy.com already made charitable contributions every year. Jeanne simply took the philanthropic culture a step further and planned an exciting fundraiser to benefit PHA.
On May 19, 2012, Jeanne and the staff at ShopJimmy.com went “Cruisin’ for a Cause.” They gathered for dinner and a chartered cruise around Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota to have fun, learn about PH and raise $800 for PHA.
“PHA helped Aunt Liz so much and has been a great organization for support. PHA is kind of a big deal in the family. It’s something we always think about,” Jeanne says.
During “Cruisin’ for a Cause,” Jeanne passed out periwinkle T-shirts and Phenomenal Hope bracelets so everyone could promote PHA and ShopJimmy.com at the fundraiser and afterward. Jeanne even made PH-themed cupcakes with fondant hearts and the PHA logo! “Cruisin’ for a Cause” was a surprise to Liz, but next year Liz and Jeanne want to make the event bigger and include more of the community.
Jeanne’s advice for anyone interested in planning a workplace fundraiser is to be persistent. Jeanne says, “Talk to the people in charge and express how important fundraising is to you.”
