The Mid-South Area
Pulmonary Hypertension Support Group met May 27, 2004 at
6:00 pm in Classic Hall, Bartlett, TN.
The first hour of the meeting was designated as “Meet and
Mingle” giving everyone the opportunity to visit and have
refreshments. There were seven Phers attending
as well as their spouses, friends or family members. One Pher who regularly attends the support group meetings
with her daughter was unable to be present. We send her
our prayers and hope she is doing better.
The
educational portion of the meeting began at 7:00 pm with
the Group Support Leader and Organizer, Barbara Thompson,
introducing the guest speaker, Dr. Marc Hofmann who is
a Pulmonologist and Critical
Care Physician with the Memphis Lung Physicians. He is
a leading authority on the diagnosis and treatment of patients
with pulmonary hypertension in the Memphis
area. Photographs were taken of the Support Group PHers with
Dr. Hofmann.
Dr.
Hofmann gave a very informative power point presentation
on pulmonary hypertension as well as answering individual
questions or concerns from the support group. It is comforting
to know there are physicians like Dr. Hofmann who are willing
to share their personal time and expertise to support their
patients, as well as other PHers,
in this manner.
The Accredo representatives in attendance were Joe Whitman,
RN, BS and Judy Corzine, Patient
Advocate. Their support of this group is invaluable.
Barbara
Thompson noted that she had placed an announcement of the
support group meeting in the Commercial Appeal. Thanks
to this (and a mix up of phone numbers in the paper), she
received a call from Representative Mike Kernell,
Tennessee House Member. Not one to miss the opportunity
to discuss pulmonary hypertension, Barbara took this phone
call as a chance to promote awareness. Representative Kernell indicated
he would like to bring guests onto his cable TV show to
discuss pulmonary hypertension. Stay tuned…we will notify
everyone when a definite date is set.
