Taylor Caffrey Memorial 5K Run/Walk
Event Organizer Who Raises Awareness & Research Funds Nominated for Award
On June 2, 2012, 800+ people gathered from the Anaheim, Calif., area to support the memory of Taylor Renee Caffrey (pictured right at bottom) and to raise money for pulmonary hypertension research. Taylor’s mother, Shari, created Taylor’s Wish and organizes a 5K fun run/walk every year to support PHA’s research programs. Her efforts have raised over $60,000 for the cause and awareness in her community (not including this year’s funds). For the work that she does for the PH community, Shari has been nominated for an award that she needs your votes to win.
Raising Awareness in Her Community
Before the event, Shari and Taylor’s Wish garnered huge publicity. This year, Taylor’s picture appeared on three billboards, one of which was at the Anaheim Angels stadium, and Taylor’s story was featured in TV news coverage on her local ABC station. Check out the Caffrey family as well as local PH kid Lucas Van Wormer (pictured with billboard right) in this news spot.
Why She Does It
“Taylor was diagnosed when she was 3 with pulmonary hypertension. It is terminal. It was caught too late. Shortly after Tay died, I knew I had to channel my grief into something positive or it was going to destroy me, my family, and my life. Tay was so strong and brave. I had to be the same. Brooke needed us. So, Taylor’s Wish was born. If Tay was still alive, her wish would be for another family not to have to lose a loved one to PH. All proceeds raised by Taylor’s Wish go to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association’s research programs. We have HOPE and happiness again.”
Lady GODIVA Semi-Finalist
Shari is one of only nine women to become a semi-finalist for the Lady GODIVA Program for the work that she does for the PH community. From June 5 to June 28, 2012, the public will be able to vote for the semi-finalist in each region that most inspires them. Once voting closes, one woman from each region will receive a $1,000 grant toward her cause, and advance as a finalist to the next round of the program, where she will be eligible to win a $10,000 grant.
You can vote once a day until June 28, 2012, and leave a comment on her page about how she has inspired you.
