Stanford PH Researcher Receives Department of Defense Funding
Each year, the Department of Defense (DOD) makes fewer than 30 diseases eligible for study in its Peer Review Medical Research Program (PRMRP). For fiscal year 2008 (FY08), researchers submitted 827 grant proposals representing 21 diseases. Dr. Peter Kao, a researcher from the Stanford School of Medicine, received funding for his PH proposal. Learn more about Dr. Kao and his research.
The inclusion and funding of PH research in the PRMRP is a testament to the quality of work produced within the field. It illustrates the commitment of researchers like Dr. Kao to exploring the mechanisms of PH in order to improve patient quality of life and find a cure for PH.
PHA also salutes the 36 additional researchers whose applications to the DOD focused on pulmonary hypertension. We look forward to working to ensure the direction of FY09 DOD research funding toward projects that impact our understanding of PH and bring us closer to a cure.
PHA’s 5th Annual Congressional Luncheon
Nearly 100 people from five states spread the word about pulmonary hypertension on Capitol Hill during PHA’s 5th Annual Congressional Luncheon. At lunch, legislative staff from across the country mingled with patients, family members and medical professionals. Post-lunch lobby visits put patients and family in their senators’ offices for meetings with legislative staff. Three groups got to meet their senators face-to-face, including a group of 60 from North Carolina who had a photo op with Sen. Richard Burr on the steps of the Capitol.
Pictured right, Paulette met Sen. Thomas Carper from her home state of Delaware.
