Grandmother’s Giving Spurred by Hope of New Treatment Options
Henriette Abraham’s granddaughter Rachel was born with PH eight years ago. Her family was devestated. Rachel spent many of her first days on an ECHMO, a machine that assists the heart and lungs, and did not come home from the hospital until she was three-months old. When her central line was first put in for Flolan, it was a big shock to the family.
Being the grandmother of a PH patient is a source of anxiety, and Henriette has worried that Rachel is frail and prone to pulmonary infection. Fortunately, Rachel is doing extremely well. She attends school and though she is still on Flolan, her doctors are working to transition her to oral and inhaled medications. The family has learned to adopt a positive attitude and make the most of the situation.
Therapies for PH have improved in the eight years of Rachel’s life. Henriette is optimistic that the treatment options for PH will continue to improve and that this will have a positive result for Rachel. It is for this reason that Henriette generously donates to PHA’s research fund, that Rachel’s parents organize an annual golf tournament for PH research, and that Rachel organized a bake sale.
