About the People Who Give

Lou Ann Gibbs – Fighting PH with Gifts of Stock

As with many PHers, for years I was misdiagnosed as having panic attacks, altitude sickness or anxiety. As a nurse who took pride in staying fit, having my symptoms dismissed as anxiety was frustrating. Finally I recognized that something was seriously wrong when I attempted ice climbing (of frozen waterfalls) in Ouray, Colorado. That day I actually thought I was close to pushing up daisies (or perhaps icicles). It was then that I took control of my own health and ordered the tests that eventually determined my PH.

Seven years have passed and I am determined to stay as fit as I can. Everyday I swim, walk and nap. Recognizing that no one likes someone who complains about their health, I don’t discuss my disease unless specifically asked. I share my frustrations with my husband of 42 years and he supports and comforts me.

My Husband Bruce and I both feel strongly about financially supporting PHA. We believe that the contributions we and others make will help educate health professionals about PH and eventually lead to a cure for this disease. For us the easiest way to donate is by donating shares of common stock. Even though the shares have appreciated since their purchase, we don’t have to report any gain on our tax return. In addition we reduce our current tax bill and PHA receives the full value to further its mission. It is a win-win – my husband and I benefit and so does PHA. The process is easy and PHA can explain the mechanics to anyone considering donating common stock.

Who knows why we have this disease. Perhaps it makes us appreciate each and every day. It does challenge us to keep fighting, to keep going, to value the beauty of life. Never give up or give in.

Fondly, Lou Ann Gibbs
