In Memory of Grandmother of
Samantha Wiener: Bat Mitzvah
When Samantha Wiener was preparing to become a bat mitzvah (a coming of age in the Jewish religion), she asked her guests to make gifts to PHA in honor of her celebration and in memory of her grandmother, who had passed away two years earlier following a battle with PH. As a means to further raise awareness about PH, Samantha chose to display materials about PH and PHA at her reception.
When asked about her motivation to remember her grandmother in this special way, Samantha said, “It was really sad for me to see my grandmother suffer and I don’t want others to have to experience that. I want to see research lead to a cure. My grandma was not diagnosed until shortly before her passing, so I want to support PHA’s medical education programs so that more patients will be diagnosed and put on treatment before it’s too late. We had never heard of PH before my grandmother was diagnosed. I found PHA on the internet and it provides so many great resources; I wish we knew about PHA when my grandma was still alive.”
