by daughter Thelma Vasquez
My name is Thelma Vasquez. I am an Occupational Therapist (OT). I had not heard of pulmonary hypertension until my mom was diagnosed about a year ago (I think, that time is such a blur). Anyway, I thought “OK, you have pulmonary hypertension (PH) and we will fix it.” Of course, with research I found it was not that easy. There are of course medications that help but there is no cure.
I am devastated that my mom has PH but as an OT I have to adapt and help my mom adapt as much as possible. It is very difficult!! It is difficult to see her cry because she gets tired getting dressed or because she can no longer go to the mall and shop for clothes or shoes. Of course, with physical therapy and occupational therapy she has improved and has become more independent! I am very excited that PH has an association so that we can work together to decrease the occurance of PH and find a cure!
In our area we do not have a PH support group and together, my mom and I are trying to start one. Will keep you posted and hope to meet you at the PHA Conference.
