On November 3, 2004, I gave birth to fraternal quintuplets at 27 weeks and 6 days. Starting at 2:16pm Morgan Layne, Sean William, Robert Benjamin, Carson Matthew, and Madelyn Justene were born. Total weight for all babies was 9 lbs 6 oz. We had many ups and downs in the NICU. Our precious Carson had the most issues.
On November 7, Carson hemorrhaged in his lungs. At 14 days old he perforated in his ileum. He was transported to the Children's Hospital for emergency surgery on his belly. His next surgery was a PDA ligation followed by a laser eye surgery for ROP with Plus disease. At about 3 months old, his belly was reconnected and his ostemy was gone. I held my son for the first time at 90 days old. He smiled all the time. He brought us so much joy. He knew who his Mommy and Daddy were.
At 5 months old he had a tracheotomy to help with his BPD. Six weeks after his trach surgery, he was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension. We had no idea what the future would hold for Carson. He started steroid therapy with dexamethosone, Nitric Oxide, Viagra and Flovent. We did several rounds of these drugs and got less and less good time out of them. On May 16, 2005, Carson went from the arms of his mother and father into the arms of Jesus. Leaving my baby at the hospital after he had passed was the hardest thing I have ever done. I never got to bring my baby home to be with his brothers, sisters, daddy, and mommy. Carson had many hurdles while in the NICU, but he recovered beautifully from each and every surgery. We really did believe with all our hearts that we would bring him home to be with us.
We know that we are blessed to have five children. We were blessed to have Carson for 6 months and 13 days. We celebrate Carson at every birthday, Christmas, and anniversary of his life with Jesus. We look forward to being with him in Heaven.
I love you Carson!
