PH first appeared as a disease eligible for study under the Department of Defense Peer Review Medical Research Program (PRMP) during fiscal year 2006 and was one of only twenty-two research topics included. In that year, 7.5% of the proposals received by this program were funded, and a PH proposal was one of them. This is a testament to the quality of the research being done within the PH community.
The Fiscal Year 2008 Defense Appropriations Act provides $50 million to the Department of Defense PRMRP and pulmonary hypertension is one of twenty-one congressionally directed topic areas eligible for study under the program. There is no guarantee that an eligible condition will receive research funding from the DOD. Proposals are funded based on their peer-review score and the amount of money available.
Although the Board Agency Announcement, or Request for Proposals, will not be issued until April, the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs has published a news release outlining the program’s funding mechanisms and other details. View details
