Sentara Heart Hospital community PH educationThe pulmonary hypertension (PH) community needs your help! Raising awareness helps all people living with PH, including those not yet diagnosed. There are many ways to educate people about the importance of early and accurate PH diagnosis and what it’s like to live with PH. You can also recruit support, raise funds toward a PH cure and have fun in the process!

Here are a few ideas to get started:

Exhibit at a local event

From schools, libraries and community centers to local hospitals, malls and art galleries – there are many places to ask about setting up a table or other display that educates people about PH. You can order free educational materials from the PHA Store and search for a local support group to find volunteers to work with you.

The Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) can help! Let us know what you are planning and contact us for help promoting the event.

Give a talk

Sentara Heart Hospital PH community talkYou have knowledge that benefits the community. Many groups welcome speakers like you. To set up a speaking opportunity, talk to the leaders of religious or fraternal organizations, school groups or your local chamber of commerce.

Be sure to request free materials from the PHA Store at least three weeks in advance. Depending on how much time you have to present, consider screening one of PHA's educational videos (available in our store) or one of PHA's Heart2CurePH public awareness campaign videos.

After your talk, ask your audience to take action! Examples include asking them to:

Let us know how we can help! PHA will also be glad to share your success with the PH community.

Get a proclamation

A proclamation is issued by a mayor or governor to formally recognize a person or organization. By connecting with your local elected officials, you can have November declared "Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Month" in your community. A proclamation catches the attention of the media and raises awareness. In addition, the mayor or governor may agree to make the proclamation signing a photo opportunity. Download our free template (.doc) and guide to securing a proclamation (PDF).
