PHA Board of Trustees
Cindy Pickles, RN
Support group leader
Near the end of 2002, Cindy Pickles developed acute respiratory distress. It took two and a half years of testing and multiple consults before a pulmonary hypertension diagnosis (secondary to scleroderma) was made. Not wanting others to experience her roller coaster ride in search of the correct diagnosis, Cindy organized the Piedmont PH Support Group, which includes patients from the Triad area of North Carolina. The group is active with PH fundraising, education, awareness and advocacy. Cindy also served as the Conference Committee co-chair for PHA’s 9th International Conference and Scientific Sessions (2010).
Cindy graduated from the Montefiore Hospital School of Nursing, Pittsburgh, PA in 1971. She obtained a BSN from Gardner Webb University in 1988. Her nursing career includes 19 years working in Emergency Departments and 11 years working for HMOs. Her HMO experience includes: case management, claims review, prior authorizations, admission certification, quality improvement and HEDIS reporting. She worked one and a half years for NC Baptist Hospital implementing and teaching a new an inpatient acuity system.
Originally from St. Mary’s, Penn., a small town in the northwest section of the state, Cindy now lives in Lewisville, N.C. with John, her husband of 36 years. They have two children: Tim, 35, a computer programmer for the government and LeeAnn, 20, a student at UNC Charlotte majoring in system engineering. Two miniature schnauzers – Sassy and Gizmo – are great companions for the empty nesters.
