Another Year Ahead!
Wednesday, March 13, 2013

Hello Mid-Hudson Valley phriends!

Another year has begun for the Mid-Hudson Valley support group.  We met tonight, March 13, at the Poughkeepsie Galleria Mall - Community Room.  It was an intimate meeting, and a new member has joined our support group.  Our small group continues to grow as we spread the word about our group in the Mid-Hudson Valley region.  I'm excited that people are finding us and are learning more about us.  A special thank you to Melissa Carrigan, RN from Accredo.  Thank you for helping me pick up the food from Longobardi's Restaurant and bring to the meeting.  Since it was a small group tonight, Melissa really gave one to one attention and addressed concerns that patients should address with their PH specialist.  Melissa will be working in the Mid-Hudson Valley region and building a communication with the local physicians, so that the PH patients can be better served in an emergency situation when not able to get to their PH specialist's office or hospital.  Next support group meeting is scheduled for Saturday, June 15, 1pm at the Poughkeepsie Galleria Mall - Community Room.  More details to come soon!

Winter Wonderland!!!
Friday, December 28, 2012

On Wednesday, December 19, the Mid-Hudson Valley Support Group members gathered for the first holiday party sponsored by the PHA Central Fund.  With the cold weather outside, the support group gathered inside the warm and cozy Olive Garden with much laughter and good cheer amongst phriends and family.  23 people in total attendance, including 6 PH patients.  We shared goals for the new year and shared our favorites of the Christmas season such as favorite Christmas Carol or song, Christmas movie or story, Christmas character, Christmas colors or decorations, Christmas meal or desserts, etc.  And a new face to the group won the door prize, which he was excited since it was his first time winning something.  We enjoyed a delicious meal at the Olive Garden with an array of different pasta meals to choose from.  Each person went home with a small Christmas stocking with goodies inside.  We had a such a joyous and wonderful evening.  Until next year, have a wonderful New Year!!!

Oh What A Night!!!
Thursday, June 14, 2012

A great time was had by all at the last Mid-Hudson Valley Support Group meeting held on Wednesday, June 13, 6:00pm.  There were some new members that joined us that evening and some older members returned.  Our biggest turnout since our establishment in November 2008.  A total of 30 people.  25 were patients, caregivers and family; 7 were youth out of the 25 in attedance.  We had 5 professionals attend the meeting.  Everyone shared a little bit about themselves and what they hoped to get out of the meeting.  There was such a great feeling of hope in that room as each member spoke and shared with others.  We also learned about the latest treatments for PAH, and how questions were asked regarding some of the medications being prescribed how doctors choose which medications to prescribe to their PH patients.  We all enjoyed a great dinner at Uno's Chicago Grill.  The waiter was so patient and very help.  Thank you Jennifer Hoffman from Gilead for sponsoring our support group meeting and for arranging for Dr. Gregg Lanier, Director of Heart Failure and PH at Westchester Medical Center.  Thank you Dr. Lanier for the information and answering questions.  Thanks to Actelion representative for coming out and Melissa, Nurse at Accredo for joining us.  A special thank to you Yusetty Medina from Accredo who always comes out and supports our group.  We appreciate it so much.  Until the next meeting, take care and be empowered by hope!!!

Spread the Word
Wednesday, November 30, 2011

The Mid-Hudson Valley Support Group raised awareness about PH during Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Month.  We set up a table at the Poughkeepsie Galleria Mall on Saturday, November 5 from 12:30pm-3:30pm perfectly located outside down the corridor of the restroom area and were many shoppers would be visiting.  Awareness event was sponsored by Accredo.  They gave us flashlight key chains, hand sanitized spray, band aids with holder, post it pads, pens and treats to share with the people.  Also had a delicious, not a low sodium lunch, but I'd saved up mg) lunch from the pizza shop in the Galleria.  From PHA, we passed out information pamphlets about PH and PHA, and we actually packed it up after we ran out of the PH informational pamphlets.  I had a great day full of fun, laughs, and meeting and talking to interesting people.  Thanks Yusetty, Tiandra, and Gabby for all your hard work!!!

Take off the cheese!
Tuesday, October 11, 2011

At the September 17, support group meeting we discussed a low sodium diet. A quick way to reduce sodium is to take the cheese off the burger. It'll save you about 450mg of sodium. Another great tip is to throw away the salt shaker and visit for low-sodium recipe ideas also no salt spice options.

It was a Zumba party!!!
Monday, March 21, 2011

Thank you Linda Thomas, Zumba Instructor for coming to the Mid-Hudson Valley PH Support Group.  It was a lot fun!  The less intense, modified latin moves and great music of Zumba Gold is a great way to stay healthy.  And moves can be done seated as well.  Go to and find a Zumba party near you.  Remember to talk to your doctor before you start any exercise program.  She bangs, she bangs, Oh baby when she moves, she moves, I go crazy 'cause she looks like a flower but stings like a bee like every girl in history...

Thank you Tina, Actelion Pharmaceuticals for sponsoring lunch from Panera Bread and Yusetty, Accredo for your continued support and the take home goodies.

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

Saturday, September 18th was a great meeting for the Mid-Hudson Valley Support Group.  It was sponsored by the PHA Central Fund, which was really easy to apply for and really fast response from Sophie.  Thanks, Sophia!  To all the PH patients and caregivers that were able to attend the meeting, it was a pleasure seeing everyone again and if you need anything before the next meeting feel free to call me anytime.  And as always we have support and assistance from Yusetty from Accredo.  Thanks for picking me and the food up for the meeting.  It was nice to meet Susan, the new Clinical Advocacy Manager from Actelion for our region, who will sponsor our next meeting.  It was great to talk of hope and what gets us through this PH journey.  It feels good to share laughs.  We came up with some great ideas of speaker topics for next year, and we will try to fit them all in.  Well, until next time, which is Saturday, November 20.
