On Nov. 13, 2010, the Second Annual Pulmonary Pints: Pubcrawl for PH took place in the Federal Hill neighborhood of Baltimore, Md. The pubcrawl was planned by sisters Katy Hayes and Ashley Boehk, who were inspired by their mother, Kathy. Kathy, a PH patient of more than 10 years, helped plan the first Pulmonary Pints in September 2009. Sadly, Kathy passed away shortly thereafter in October 2009.

The pubcrawl in 2009 raised nearly $2,000, but Katy and Ashley had even bigger plans for 2010. Katy says, “This year, our goal was to at least double 2009’s numbers. We were on a mission. We wanted to make our mom proud.”

Determined to reach this goal, Katy and Ashley began involving family and friends to get the word out about the event. They also decided to add raffles to 2010’s pubcrawl. They solicited local businesses for donations and tapped into other connections to secure support. Katy says, “When we first thought about doing raffles, we brainstormed and made a list: ‘Who do you know?’"

Their hard work paid off. Themed baskets, such as “spa day” and “date night,” were raffled off and raised $500. The featured item — an entirely separate raffle — was two tickets to the Dec. 5 Steelers vs. Ravens NFL game. Nearly 1,000 tickets for the game were sold, raising more than $2,500! Prize drawings for all pubcrawl participants were also part of the festivities. Each attendee received a ticket that made him or her eligible for one of 10 gift cards to local restaurants that were drawn throughout the afternoon.

The raffles and giveaways played an integral part in building enthusiasm and excitement for the pubcrawl. Katy elaborates, “I would definitely suggest doing raffles. It helped get people interested in participating in the pubcrawl and added to the enjoyment of the event.”

Overall, 2010’s Pulmonary Pints: Pubcrawl for PH far exceeded original hopes and expectations. Thanks to Katy and Ashley’s persistence and dedication, the event had 93 registered participants and raised more than $5,500 for PHA’s research programs and community services. Even though this year’s pubcrawl just took place, plans and ideas for 2011 are already circulating to make next year even bigger and better!
