Special Events Mentor Profile
"The best piece of advice that I can give to another volunteer planning his or her first event is surround yourself with people that have different skills than you do. Start planning early and create a project plan or task list and divide and conquer. Many hands make light work. Ask people you know for help (printing, securing and making donations, etc). Always have your sponsor letter with you in your car when you stop at a restaurant or other service provider you frequent. People will help if you ask and especially if you are a frequent customer. The more you ask, the easier it gets!"
Special Event Type:
Western themed dinner and silent auction
Special Event Name:
Spur A Cure for PH (Phoenix, Ariz.)
Number of Years Held:
Amy's Topics of Interest Include:
- Creating and securing sponsorship opportunities
- Event logistics
- Fundraising with family and friends
- Incorporating PH awareness into an event
- Obtaining donated items
- Getting great event turnout through publicity
Amy Decided to Host a Special Event Because:
Her friend Mark had PH and they were very close friends since he was diagnosed. Mark and his wife wanted to start a fundraiser, and Amy wanted to help after learning more about PH and seeing his challenges. Although the trio didn't golf, they volunteered every year for the local PH golf tournament and wanted to do something they thought would be another option for folks to raise awareness and funds for PH!
When Organizing a Special Event, Amy Most Enjoys:
"Meeting the patients that appreciate the work we are doing. Mark passed away the day after our inaugural event so getting to know other patients gives me the lift to keep the work going!"
